There’s no dull moment in Weatherford, a city packed with attractions for all ages. Here are a few activities to enjoy in this corner of Texas.
- Soak in the rays at Splash Kingdom Wild West
This Wild West-themed water park was designed to look like a mine shaft with four slides and a tipping bucket. There are two kiddie slide houses where the small ones can play safely. Wagon Trail Springs is another kid-friendly highlight where toddlers can wade into several inches of water and go down a rubber slide.
But the crown jewel of Splash Kingdom Wild West is the wave pool. It contains a remarkable 220,000 gallons of crystalline water that sloshes around in cyclical waves.
Don’t feel like going for a dip? You can watch all the action from the mouth of the pool, where lawn chairs are spread out.
- Explore Chandor and Clark Gardens
Enjoy Weatherford’s sunny weather as you go for a walk at Chandor or Clark Gardens.
Chandor Gardens is an exquisite 3.5-acre property designed after some of the finest English gardens, but with traditional Chinese architecture in mind. The garden was created by renowned portrait artist Douglas Chandor in 1936 so it’s not surprising to find this gem in the historic district. Highlights include a magnificent 30-foot waterfall and the 5,600-square foot Chandor Mansion.
Clark Gardens, meanwhile, is the only garden that is open to the public in the city. It is another visual treat, with fragrant spring blossoms, gleaming ponds, and cascading waterfalls. It’s not unusual to spot wild swans, peacocks, blue herons, and great egrets on the 50-acre property, so it’s the perfect place to go bird watching.
- Go hiking at Holland Lake Park
Widely considered as the best park in Weatherford, Holland Lake Park offers over a mile of scenic nature and concrete trails for hiking and jogging. The softball complex is open to the public and has hosted countless leagues and tournaments. Camp Holland, which borders the park, is frequently visited by boy scouts and other guests who want to sleep under the stars.
Holland Lake, the site of two youth fishing events, gets restocked with fish on a regular basis. Blue catfish, perch, trout, and bass swim in its waters.
- Drop by the Doss Heritage and Culture Center
Go on a guided tour of the Doss Heritage and Culture Center (DHCC), which begins with the story of the Comanche, who once roamed the great plains of Texas. The tour also features the lives and achievements of famous Texans like Broadway star Mary Martin and her equally famous son who played the iconic JR Ewing in the hit 80s TV series, Dallas, Larry Hagman.
Most of DHCC’s exhibits are on rotation, which ensures that each trip you take will be unique and memorable. Various events, such as Doss After Dark and Parents’ Night Out, take place here throughout the year.
- Sample wines at Sweet Springs Winery
Located northwest of Weatherford, Sweet Springs Winery spans 12.5 acres of premier vineyard land. It practices sustainable farming to preserve the rich agricultural land’s biodiversity and soil and water health. Sample some of the finest red, white, and rose wines at the Weatherford Tasting Room or better yet, join the wine club for various perks and discounts.
