11 Facts about the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo

Fort Worth Rodeo

If you’re looking at homes for sale in Tarrant County, you’ve no doubt heard about the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

This major event is to ranchers and cowboys what the Super Bowl is to football fanatics. In the course of 23 days between January and February, over one million people and 24,000 livestock flock to the Will Rogers Coliseum to celebrate the oldest running livestock and rodeo event in the country.

If you’re visiting the event for the first time, here’s what you need to know:

  1. No vehicles allowed
  2. You can expect to see the best livestock at the All-Western Parade but the one thing you won’t see are motorized vehicles. This time-honored tradition dates back to 1896.

  3. Milking with the stars
  4. One of the most popular attractions here is the celebrity goat-milking contest. In this competition, local radio and TV personalities battle against each other to extract the most milk in the shortest amount of time.

  5. You get freebies with every ticket
  6. Did you know that your event ticket also comes bundled with a free pass to the Fort Worth Museum of Science History and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame?

  7. Livestock equals big bucks
  8. How much, you ask? 2017’s grand champion steer, a European crossbreed, sold for a whopping $240,000. The best-of-show barrow fetched $42,000. And the top lamb collected a cool $40,000.

  9. And so does the rodeo
  10. Riding a raging bull entails a lot of risk, and rodeo riders can pocket big prizes if they emerge victorious. Winners have won as much as $700,000 in purses in a single year.

  11. It’s not just about livestock
  12. Watching cows, pigs, and horses not your thing? No worries – there’s also a full schedule of Texas country artists who play live music at the event. Brands also often organize their own concerts at the venue.

  13. It’s time to network
  14. At its heart, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is a marketing and networking event. Hence exhibitors will be more than happy to talk to you about their animals.

  15. Animals get in on the fun, too
  16. If you think goats and llamas are cute, wait until you see them dolled up for the costume competition. This year’s winning goat entrant wore a full-blown Titanic-inspired getup.

  17. Hop onto a thrilling carnival ride
  18. Yet another reason to bring the whole family is the carnival attraction at the venue. It’s the perfect place to enjoy thrilling rides and fun games in between shows.

  19. Attend cowboy church
  20. Shepherd’s Valley Cowboy Church holds a service every Sunday throughout the show’s run. It’s a rare opportunity to see a congregation bound both by their faith and their livelihood as cowboys.

  21. Head to the rodeo’s new home next year
  22. For many years, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo has called the Will Rogers Coliseum home. But come 2020, it will move to the 14,000-seat Dickies Arena right next door.

Of course, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is just one of the many events you can attend in this vibrant city. There are many other exciting fairs and events that celebrate the culture, art, and cuisine of this one-of-a-kind community.
